The NUJ Dublin Broadcasting Branch demonstrated outside the Israeli embassy in Ballsbridge on Thursday to protest the killing of Palestinian journalist Yasser Murtaja, who was shot by Israeli forces while covering a demonstration in the Gaza Strip.Yasser was wearing a protective vest with the inscription “Press” that clearly identified him as a journalist. He was a photographer with the Gaza based Ain Media agency and was one of nine people killed after Israeli troops used live fire. Reporters Without Borders says at least six other journalists were injured.
The NUJ has condemned the killing and called for an independent investigation. Séamus Dooley, Assistant General Secretary of the NUJ called Israel a “regime that doesn’t care about human rights and has shown disregard for human life.”
Betty Purcell said that “its so important to show our solidarity with our Palestinain sisters and brothers, because an attack on any media worker is an attack on all media workers”.
Other speakers were journalists Richard Crowley, Emma O’Kelly, and Una Smith.
