Public meetings
Trademark starts the week off with a seminar on Embracing the Future – Community Wealth Building and Economic Democracy led by Joe Guinan of The Democracy Collective.
Despite all participating in the economy, many of us feel that economics is too complicated for us to understand. To help people overcome this fear, Financial Justice Ireland’s Econowha? course starts back this week. This introductory course offers different perspectives on key economic concepts over four Wednesday evenings.
Dr Maurice Casey’s much-awaited talk on The Irish Abroad in the USSR: Hidden Histories of the Irish Abroad takes place this Thursday. The online event is hosted by EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum and the Dublin Festival of History and will look at the lives of Irish emigrants and Russo-Irish families in the USSR. A €5 donation to MASI is welcomed.
If you’re feeling nostalgic, the Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) will be hosting Culture at risk: Digitally preserving the referendum on the 8th Amendment as part of Culture Night 2020. Speakers will include Amy Walsh from TFMR, ARC’s Linda Kavanagh, and Clare Lymer from National Irish Visual Arts Library.
Trade unions
On Tuesday ICTU NI will be running a webinar on Harassment and Bullying as part of its Equality Law Seminar Series. The seminar will examine the types of behaviour that can constitute harassment, how harassment differs to bullying, and what legal remedies are available to workers.
When the pandemic hit these shores, it turned out that so many of those things workers had been demanding for years had actually been possible all this time. Fórsa is making use of this moment to push forward its campaign for a four-day week and has organised, alongside a number of NGOs, a public briefing this Thursday on a four-day week in Ireland.
Taking action
News has come through that the Gaza Strip has over 400 cases of community transmission of Covid-19. As a matter of urgency, the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign is calling on supporters to contact Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney, to demand an end to Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza and for the immediate provision of all necessary medical supplies to the people of Palestine.
The Dáil
Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about the goings on in the Dáil. TDs are back on Tuesday with the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2020 and the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment will be making a statement on climate action.
On Wednesday there’ll be a Private Members’ motion on the Debenham’s workers, as well as statements on protecting jobs and supporting business and on the ‘expenditure response to the Covid-19 crisis’. Sinn Féin’s Ban on Rent Increases Bill 2020 will be back in the Dáil for second stage on Thursday.
The Covid Committee will be looking at the Final Report of the Covid-19 Nursing Homes Expert Panel on Tuesday and at the question of sport on Friday.
