Limerick City Council has granted approval for the construction of a memorial to the six men from the City and county who fought with the International Brigade in Spain between 1936 and 1939.
The piece of sculpture will be erected on publicly-held property and it is planned that it will be unveiled in conjunction with a festival, featuring talks and music, on the weekend of Friday 12th -Sunday 14th September.
The Limerick International Brigades Memorial Trust (LIBMT) is seeking financial support towards the cost of the memorial.
LIBMT PRO, Ger McCloskey, said: “We are approaching the general public for funding on the basis that this memorial will be reflective of the part played by the ordinary working people in the fight against fascism.”
He added: “The dangers of fascism, racism, xenophobia, homophobia must not go unchallenged and should be confronted wherever they exists. Let’s make Limerick a symbol of hope, a city of tolerance where these dark values have no place. This monument should be used as a vehicle for change.”
