The growing housing crisis was the focus of discussion across the Dublin area and Meath in recent weeks.

Veteran social campaigner Fr. Peter McVerry called on the Government to declare a national emergency to deal with the issue of homelessness at a major conference on the crisis in Liberty Hall, Dublin, on Saturday, 3rd October.

Fr. McVerry was joined by housing campaigner and Workers’ Party activist Lorraine Hennessy to discuss the crisis at meetings in Ballymun, north Dublin, and Kells, county Meath, during October.

Hennessy spoke about the appalling conditions that social housing communities across the country have been left in and the role that both local and national authorities have played in their continued neglect.

Fr. McVerry also addressed a meeting in Stoneybatter, Dublin 7 with Sive Bresnihan of the Dublin Tenants Association and Workers’ Party councillor Eilis Ryan in early November.
