Sean was among the generation of republicans who progressed their movement in the direction of socialist politics and community activism in the 1960s.
He led republican activists in the North Waterford/South Kilkenny area into activity on housing and fishing rights campaigns.
Sean was elected to Kilkenny County Council for Official Sinn Féin in 1974 and would go on to fight many local, general and one European election campaign for that organisation as it developed into the Workers’ Party. He played a very active role in developing socialist policies on economic and social issues serving on his party’s National Executive Council for many years. A carpenter by trade he was also active in his trade union UCATT.
Very conscious of the importance of maintaining knowledge of Ireland’s radical political history, in recent years Sean played a key role in establishing the George Brown Memorial Committee to ensure the memory of the international brigade member was maintained in his native Kilkenny. Sean was also very active in his local anti-water charges campaign. He died after a short illness in December 2016.
